Ce masque hautement stylisé s’inscrit dans un ensemble d’une dizaine de masques Bafo de la région du sud-ouest du Cameroun acquis avant 1930. Les traits sculptés en ronde-bosse à la surface en creux du visage en forme de cœur se résument à deux yeux tubulaires, un long nez triangulaire et de longues dents limées formant un rectangle. Leurs angles contrastent avec l’ovale du masque.
Pour un exemple muséal comparable, voir le masque Bafo acquis en 1899 par Leopold Conradt conservé au Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Ethnologisches Museum (inv. n° III C 10195). En mains privées, deux masques Bafo remarquables ont appartenu au sculpteur Jacob Epstein1 et un autre à Paul Guillaume, vendu chez Enchères Rive Gauche, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, Collection Vérité, 17-18 juin 2006, lot 180.
This highly stylized mask is one among a group of about ten Bafo masks from the Southwest region of Cameroon acquired prior to 1930. The heart-shaped mask is composed of a concave plane in which the facial features are carved. These include two tubular eyes, a triangular nose, and long, filed teeth inscribed within a rectangular area. The angular details of the face contrast the rounded, ovular shape of the mask.
For a comparable example in a museum collection, see the Bafo mask acquired in 1899 by Leopold Conradt at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Ethnologisches Museum (inv. no. III C 10195). A few other notable examples of Bafo masks in private collections include the two once owned by the sculptor Jacob Epstein1 as well as the one from the ex-collection of Paul Guillaume, later sold at Enchères Rive Gauche, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, Collection Vérité, 17-18 June 2006, lot 180.
