Moore gifted the present work to Hans-Heinrich Hewarth von Bittenfeld, an esteemed German diplomat who was patriotic and strongly opposed the Nazi regime. Hewarth von Bittenfeld passed information to the Allies in the lead-up to and during the Second World War, and from 1955 was the first post-war German ambassador in London.
