Peploe made regular visits to France from 1904, often in the company of J. D. Fergusson. He loved the intellectual stimulus and bohemian lifestyle that Paris provided, and was welcomed by Fergusson’s group of friends in the city which included a number of American artists such as Anne Estelle Rice. The Luxembourg Gardens and its habitués was a particularly favoured subject for Peploe, and the bold application of paint and saturated colour palette shows the influence of the Fauves, who the artist had encountered in France.
