This terracotta is reminiscent of several of Gaetano Gandolfi's compositions, both sculpted (notably his Reclining figure of Apollo, Casa Mentasti, Bologna, see Roli, p. 320, fig. 3) and drawn (for example the Reclining Nude, Christie's, London, 6 July 1993, lot 110), all of which underline the artist's strong interest in musculature. Born near Bologna into an important family of artists, Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802) was a prolific artist, producing paintings, engravings and sculptures throughout his long career.
