Lot Essay

Miniature vases of this design are very rare. A similar pair from the Collection of Li Chibai, is illustrated by A. W. Bahr, Old Chinese Porcelain and Works of Art in China, London, 1911, pl. LXXXX, top centre. Single vases of this design include one with a restored foot sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 28 April 1992, lot 218; the pair to the present vase, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 11 April 2008, lot 2904; and one sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 8 April 2014, lot 3110. Compare also with a pair of miniature vases of this form but painted in underglaze-blue in the Tianminlou Collection, illustrated in Chinese Porcelain, The S. C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Hong Kong, 1987, pl. 55.
