The collector was based in Japan during 1946-1950, when he most likely acquired this sculpture. He relocated back to California to become a leading film producer, working with stars such as Marylin Monroe. He passed away in California in 2011

Lot Essay

A comparable wood head of Boddhisatva is published in Lubor Hájek and Werner Forman, A Book of Chinese Art: Four Thousand Years of Sculpture, Painting, Bronze, Jade, Lacquer and Porcelain, London, 1966, no. 142. The dating of this lot is consistent with the carbon 14 test result from Paleo Labo
