Lot Essay

The seal face is carved with a six-character inscription reading wu chang ju yu suo hao, ‘Things gather around those who appreciate them’. There is a two-character signature reading Shangjun on the side, which is the pseudonym of the legendary carver Zhou Bin, who is thought to have worked during the Kangxi period; and another poetic inscription on the side signed Yu Dian (1655-?), a scholar-official during the Kangxi and Yongzheng periods, known for his calligraphy and writing.
