Lot Essay

The decoration of these chairs follows closely the fashionable Louis Quatorze Roman style, popularised by the Livres d'Appartments issued by Daniel Marot (d. 1752), 'architect' to William III. The triumphal arched backs with ornately scrolled foliate carving is typical of the designs produced by the great Huguenot draughtsman and echos the work of Thomas Roberts, appointed chief supplier to the Royal Household in 1686. A related set of six William & Mary walnut chairs was sold, Chirk Castle, Wrexham, Christie's House Sale, 21 June 2004 lot 129.
