The Betenson family were relatives of Lord Robert Bertie, husband of Lady Mary Bertie (see lot 129), the great-aunt of Mary, Marchioness of Downshire. The painting probably dates from the late 1630s or early 1640s, whilst Johnson was working in England and before he left for Middelburg. The costume, which Oliver Millar described as 'rich and rather free in texture', demonstrates the influence of Anthony van Dyck, more than is usual for Johnson (op cit., p. 19).

We are grateful to Professor Karen Hearn for her assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
