The sitter was the eldest daughter of Sir James Long, 5th Bt. (1682-1729), Member of Parliament for Wiltshire, and his wife the Hon. Henrietta Greville (1683-1765), daughter of Fulke, 5th Baron Brooke of Beauchamps Court. The sitter's younger sister, Miss Rachel Long, was painted by Vanderbank in the same year, and the portrait was sold as the previous lot in the Christie's sale in November 1978.
