Lot Essay

Extremely rare and seldom to come to market, the Patek Philippe reference 5339 was produced for a brief three years beginning in 2010. As the successor to reference 3939, the 5339 was a proper, contemporary upgrade and even more exclusive than its predecessor with a total production of less than a few dozen examples. Its design is influenced by the original reference 3520 and classic reference 3919 with its Clous de Paris (hobnail) bezel with subsidiary seconds. However, the case is now 36mm (a 3mm increase in size) and presents as a “large Calatrava,” but it is far from that due to its grand complications. Found within are two of the most magnificent complications: a minute repeater and a tourbillon.

Like its predecessor, reference 5339R utilizes Caliber RTO 27 PS and unlike many Patek Philippe movements, the Côtes de Genève have been concentrically finished, giving way to the flowing architecture of the movement. The elevated tourbillon bridge and repeater strikers have been perfectly black polished, aiding in contrast and beauty. Most distinctive, the minute wheel has been skeletonized with five jovial, meandering arms. The wheel is a joyous feature that is captivating to view, thanks to its rounded polishing and interior angles. The stars of the show are the tourbillon and minute repeater bringing the movement to life. The repeater has a bright, precise, and charming chime. These world-class calibers were created in sequence and their movement numbers have interestingly been replicated at the subsidiary seconds register on the dial.

The dial may seem simplistic but at the bottom of 6 o’clock, one may notice 'Email' signifying that it is a made from enamel with applied rose gold markers. Its minimal presence is elevated by the sharp, hobnail bezel which has also been reproduced on the sapphire caseback (an additional solid gold caseback is included) to elevate the movement. The present lot delivers “full set” from the original owner and includes a personalized note from Henri Stern Watch Agency to the original owner signifying that it was the first model of the reference sold in the United States. Its Certificate of Origin is dated Christmas Day 2011 making it a wonderful gift to cherish by its new owner.
