Lot Essay

A large quarto edition of William Caxton's translation of Jacobus de Voragine's The Golden Legend was printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press in 1892. Burne-Jones made two illustrations, one showing souls being welcomed into heaven by angels, the other depicting the Expulsion from Eden. The present drawing is a version of the former design.
