Lot Essay
After training as a marine painter in the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1870-1873), Fritz Thaulow went to Germany (Karlsruhe & Düsseldorf) then settled in Paris (1875-1879). Influenced by the French en plein air artists, Thaulow spent much time travelling around various part of France to paint rivers, villages or bridges. The present painting is an excellent example of his artistic exploration to depict the slow-moving river, the light and the complex reflections upon the water. A smaller version of this composition is known.
