Lot Essay

Peder Mønsted studied with the landscape artist Andreas Fritz (1828-1906) before enrolling in the Royal Academy in Copenhagen (1873-1906). During his studies at the Academy, he was introduced to the much detailed style of genre and landscape painting. Mønsted also studied under Peder Severin Krøyer for a short period of time.

In the winter of 1882-83 Mønsted travelled to Paris where he studied with W.A. Bouguereau and worked in his studio. In Paris he was introduced to Naturalism which made a great impression on him and determined his painting style. In periods Mønsted lived abroad, Italy, Switzerland, North Africa and Greece notably. In this painting the artist shows his skilful use of light and colour as well as his taste for details and precision.
