Lot Essay

This Guanyin appears to be one of the earliest groups with the acolytes and closely resembles one dated to 1629 from The Pao-Ts'an-Shih Collection, Hong Kong, illustrated by P. J. Donnelly in Blanc de Chine, pl. 71B; another, from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Bequest of Forrest R. Brauer (85. 1502), is illustrated by John Ayers in Blanc de Chine, Divine Images in Porcelain, no. 50, p.99, where Ayers illustrates another from Blaeu's Nieuw Atlas of 1655.
