Ewers of this shape with panels of the same teardrop form appear to have been popular during the Ming dynasty and were made in various materials, especially during the 16th century. Compare to a cloisonné enamel ewer from the collection of Sir Harry and Lady Garner, included in the O.C.S. exhibition, The Arts of the Ming Dynasty, London, 1957, pl. 76, no. 282 and pl. 86, no. 313. See a highly comparable example, dated mid-16th century and bearing a Jingtai mark, in the Uldry collection (illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz in Chinesisches Cloisonne Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Museum Rietberg, Zurich, 1985, pls. 97, 97a).
