The Visitation, historiated initial 'T' on a leaf from a Gradual, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Lombardy, Pavia, second half 15th century]
An imposing, large-format leaf from a Lombard choirbook with a sensitive rendering of the Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth.

502 x 348mm. The historiated initial 'T' opening the Feast of the Visitation Mary 'Transite ad me omnes qui concupiscitis me et a generationibus meis implemini', 7 lines of text and music on a 4-line red stave, contemporary foliation in red 'XXXXIII', rubrics in red, reverse with two initials in red and blue, with contrasting penwork decoration. In a double-sided frame.

Provenance:
(1) Otto Ege (1888-1951), identified as HL 324 in S. Gwara, Otto Ege's Manuscripts, 2013. Another leaf is in Cleveland, OH, Cleveland Public library, Special Collections f 091.97 EG121M vol.1.

(2) Private American collection.

Illumination:
The style of foliate extensions and the illumination is characteristic of Pavia, and in particular the work of the Master of the Graduals in San Salvatore in Pavia (P.L. Mulas, 'Le Maître des Graduels de San Salvatore de Pavie’, Quand la peinture était dans les livres, 2007, pp.223-33), although our artist's figures are more rudimentary. A comparable can be found in a choirbook leaf with the Trinity sold at Sotheby's on 5 July 2016, lot 33.
