Rare first edition, in the original printed wrappers, of a landmark thesis of logic programming. We are able to trace just one copy in auction records. Taking as its starting point the system of classical propositional logic presented in Whitehead and Russell's Principia Mathematica, Herbrand’s important doctoral dissertation, written in 1929 as a contribution to Hilbert’s programme, was described by Jean van Heijenoort as one of the three ‘cornerstones of modern logic.’ ‘Herbrand had created a significant part of the world heritage of modern logic when he died in 1931’ (Wirth).
Octavo (237 x 169mm). (First and last leaves a little browned.) Original printed wrappers (a few light marks and one tiny closed tear to wrappers, slight split to upper hinge and to textblock at pp.96-97).
