[BOUGAINVILLE, Louis Antoine, Comte de (1729-1811)]
Voyage autour du monde, par la frégate du roi la Boudeuse et la flute l'Etoile; en 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769. Paris: Saillant & Nyon, 1771.
First edition of Bougainville’s account of the first official French circumnavigation. The author, a highly regarded officer, served as aide to the Marquis de Montcalm in Canada and was a combatant at the fall of Quebec and later Montreal. From 1762-1764, he attempted unsuccessfully to establish a French colony in the Falkland Islands, the natural history of which is the subject of a chapter in the present work. At the request of the King, he undertook the first French circumnavigation of the globe, departing Nantes in November 1766 and returning to St. Malo in March 1769 - a voyage also notable for being the first circumnavigation to include a woman: the mistress of the ship's botanist, disguised as his valet. Hill 163; Sabin 6864.
Quarto (248 x 190mm). Half-title, woodcut title vignette, head-and tailpieces, initials, 20 engraved folding maps and 3 engraved plates of vessels (a fresh, crisp copy, with only occasional faint browning, mainly confined to gathering 2Z). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, red edges (joints at head and foot of spine skilfully).
