Et Sur la Terre…Paris: Maeght, 1977.
This pristine livre d’artiste is the result of a collaboration between Chagall and André Malraux, the celebrated novelist, art historian, and statesman. Malraux’s experiences of fighting in the Spanish Civil War against Franco and his fascist regime are here illustrated by Chagall in a series of monochrome etchings. The poet suggested that the artist not ‘attach too much importance to the characters’, for to render the experience of war it was ‘not necessary to show anything more than shadows’. Cramer books 103.

Folio (444 x 332mm). Number 199 of 225 copies, printed on BFK Rives wove paper, signed and dated by author and signed by the artist, fifteen etchings with aquatint. Loose as issued, in the original paper wrappers and contained within a grey cloth cover box lettered in gilt on spine. Provenance: outer wrapper numbered 199 by publisher.
