Lot Essay

Of this work, Inness scholar LeRoy Ireland writes: "The painting...is rich in color and significant of this time of evening. Inness loved the sunset hour. There is a certain grandeur in the luminous effect of the sun, which is indicative of his rare skill." (as quoted in M. Quick, George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. I, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 2007, p. 281) The present work is included in Ireland's never published supplement to his catalogue, The Works of George Inness, the files of which are in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
