Lot Essay

This portrait of the Lauristen Throop Richmond is adorned on the reverse with a fanciful inscription noting the sitter's birthday and his current age of seventeen years. The depicted young man would become a farmer in his adulthood. The 1850 Federal Census lists Richmond's household which included his wife Deborah, daughter Frances and son Lemuel. Records note that Richmond lived until eighty-six and died of old age.
