This painting was once owned by Alfred Nathaniel Holden Curzon, 4th Baron Curzon, whose ancestors commissioned the grand Kedleston Hall from the celebrated architect Robert Adam in the 1750s. The manor was the seat of the family until the 1970s, when it was taken over by the National Trust. Alfred's son, George, the 1st Marquess Curzon, was Viceroy of India from 1899-1905, and later became a member of the House of Lords.
