Lot Essay

In Marcel Roethlisberger's 1985 article in Oud Holland discussing additions to Breenbergh's oeuvre he draws a stylistic comparison between this painting to Breenbergh's Finding of Erichthonius (appeared at Christie's London, 29 October 2003, lot 36) and Jacob and the Angel (Rijksmusem, Amsterdam) dating from 1636 and 1639 respectively (loc cit.). Roethlisberger uses these two works as touchstones to date this painting to some time within 1636 and 1639.
