Lot Essay

Two other drawn studies of Saint Cristopher carrying the Christ child by Palma are known. One is in the Galleria Estense in Modena (inv. 780; see J. Bentini, Disegni della Galleria Estense di Mondena, Modena, 1989, pp. 154-155) and the other is in Budapest (inv. 2259; see Disegni Veneti del Museo di Budapest, exhib. cat., Venice, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, 1965, no. 36, ill.). While no painting of this subject survives, 17th Century sources record in the church of Santa Maria dei Crociferi, in Venice, an altarpiece by Palma representing the Saint Christopher (S. Mason Rinaldi, Palma il Giovane. L’opera completa, Milan, 1984, p. 184).
