Lot Essay

Domenico Tiepolo drew many compositions of flying angels. None of them appears to represent a specific narrative or to be connected to a painted decoration. The angel holding the wreath on this sheet presents strong affinities with the representation of Virtue in a drawing in private collection in Wuerttemberg (see Tiepolo. Drawings by Gambattista, Domenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo from the Graphische Sammlung Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, from Private Collections in Wuerttemberg and from the Marin von Wagner Museum of the University of Wuerzburg, Stuttgart, 1971, no. 176, ill.).
