Lot Essay

At least fifty comparable and similarly signed academies are known by Picart, who was mainly active as a book illustrator (C. Dury in Bernard Picart (1673-1733). Dessinateur de Paris à Amsterdam, exhib. cat., Magny-les-Hameaux, Musée de Port-Royal des Champs, 2019, p. 80). Among these are two drawings of seated men, dated respectively 1720 and November 1723, in the Morgan Library and Museum, New York (inv. III,85e, III,85f), and a third in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-FM-253; see ibid., p. 78, no. VIII, ill.).
