Lot Essay

Barbara Regina Dietzsch specialized in the accurate rendering of flowers and insects portrayed in their most minute details. The artist most often chose to depict her subjects against a dark background, black or dark brown, which enhanced the colors, tridimensionality, and jewel-like appearance of the compositions. On this sheet she depicted a blue Snake’s Head Fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris), with two butterflies, a Comma (Polygonia c-album) and a Common pierrot (Castalius rosimon).
