Lot Essay

A very prolific book illustrator, Salomon made this drawing as part of a series of forty sheets dispersed at auction in 2004 (Christie’s, London, 6 July 2004, lots 99-116). The group consisted of preparatory studies for woodcuts published in Lyon in the 1550s to illustrate the Quadrins historiques de la Bible, a narration of Old Testament episodes in verses by Claude Paradin, published by Jean de Tournes (Lejeune, op. cit., pp. 147-180).
