Lot Essay

Sarah, Countess of Westmorland, was the daughter of the banker Robert Child, owner of Osterley Park. She eloped with John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland on 20 May 1782 to Gretna Green, and as a result was disinherited by her father.
