Lot Essay

This sheet is one of a group of small circular drawings by Wilson which were originally owned by William Lock of Norbury, and passed through a distinguished provenance to Sir Robert Witt. Four of the group are now in the Courtauld Gallery. The use of stump for modelling is typical of this group of small circular drawings.

We are grateful to Paul Spencer-Longhurst of the Richard Wilson catalogue raisonné for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
