During Cadell's first trip to Iona in 1912 he met George W. Service, a Glasgow shipowner, who was to become one of his greatest patrons. Returning to the island the following summer, Service purchased his first painting by Cadell. Service subsequently spent many holidays on Iona, and decorated his homes in Glasgow and Dunbartonshire with paintings by Cadell, many of Iona as well as commissioned portraits of his children. Cadell would often stay with the family in their house, Myrtle Park, in Cove, Dunbartonshire, or join them on their yacht, sailing around the Western Isles. Service's generous patronage contributed to Cadell's popularity and prosperity in the 1920s: he would make multiple acquisitions at one time, often from exhibitions such as those held by the Society of Eight in Edinburgh.
