Lot Essay
Rendered in characteristic lucid colour, and imbuing a silhouette of an ancient pot with sensuous connotation, the present work is testament to Antony Donaldson’s preoccupation with subverting the cliché. Taking as its subject a Moche civilization lizard pot (100-750 AD), which had been purchased by the artist from a Christie’s sale (having been illustrated on the cover), Mochica belongs to the Tourist Painting series from 2010: in which Donaldson appropriates images he has found and seen into his own graphically assured and alluring pictorial language.
