Lot Essay

The composition derives from a monumental painting by Peter Paul Rubens, datable to circa 1616-17, which forms part of a cycle of eight paintings treating the theme of victory and death of the Roman consul Decius Mus, now in the Liechtenstein Princely Collections, Vienna. Here, the composition has been adapted to the elongated format of this panel, which almost certainly once adorned a cabinet.
