Lot Essay

Another version of this composition is in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, County Durham (inv. no. B.M.701). The Bowes version, which likely dates from the mid-nineteenth century, is signed 'Valentin' and is colored differently to the present painting, suggesting that the two may derive from a print.
