Lot Essay

The bearded old man leans forward on a short staff, with one hand resting on the tree before him. He wears a tunic and a cloak. On the ground is a human skull, depicted frontally. For the motif, compare no. 173 in M. Maaskant-Kleibrink, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems in the Royal Coin Cabinet, The Hague. The gem is mounted as a ring in an early 19th century gold setting; the interior of the hoop is incised 6732 and 716.
