European Collection, circa 18th century (based on impression of the gem once in the collection of Baron Philipp von Stosch (1691-1757), Rome and Florence).
Marjorie Bronfman (1917-2012), Montreal, acquired by 1978; gifted to her daughter, Dr. Corinne Bronfman (1947-2022), Washington, D.C.; thence by descent to the current owner.

Lot Essay

The god is depicted nude but for a mantle around his legs, holding a thunderbolt and a staff. On the groundline before him is an eagle with its head turned back; Victoria flies above, proffering a wreath. The gem is mounted as a ring in 18th century gold setting.
