One side of this ringstone depicts Mercury and a cock, with a tree behind the god; the other side has an “astrological medly” centered by a nude woman, probably Venus, holding up scales, with a Cupid jumping up towards her. To one side is a bow and quiver, while in the field, there are symbols perhaps representing Libra, Venus, Sagittarius and Capricorn (see Boardman, op. cit.). The material is described in the Story-Maskelyne catalog of the Marlborough Collection as a “most curious sard, with a green hue by reflected and a red by transmitted light, having a white vein.” The gem is mounted as a swivel ring in an 18th century gold setting.
