Lot Essay

On this gem a nude satyr, crouching on a short groundline, is making a ivy wreath. It appears to be a copy of an 18th century carnelian gem in London, no. 76 in O.M. Dalton, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems of the Post-Classical Periods in the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiquities and Ethnography in the British Museum. The gem is mounted as a ring in a 19th century bi-color gold setting.
