Lot Essay

The present lot may be compared to a pair of ducks with the same enamels and form in the Collection of Lady Baillie, Leeds Castle, Maidstone, Kent, acquired in 1947. A Qianlong period jay in the same palette is illustrated by M. Cohen and W. Motley in Mandarin and Menagerie, Chinese and Japanese Export Ceramic Figures, Vol. 1, Reigate, 2008, p. 285, fig. 21.3; a pair of famille rose ducks was exhibited and illustrated in International Exhibition of Chinese Art, London, 1935/36, no.1840. A related pair of ducks sold at Christie's New York, 23 January 2007, lot 127; a pair of famille rose Qianlong ducks from the Hodroff Collection sold in the same rooms, 24 January 2007, lot 179; and a pair sold at Sotheby's London, 22 October 1963, lot 109.
