Lot Essay

This opulent and theatrical pedestal clock is by the 20th century French ébéniste Charles Bernel. Bernel was highly skilled in the production of works reviving earlier styles of cabinet-making. He, along with his contemporaries Paul Sormani, Henry Dasson and Francois Linke, were known for the high calibre of their creations in the Louis XV and XVI manner. Among Bernel’s revered clientele was H.M. Queen Mary, who owned a gilt-bronze mounted fire screen that was placed in her Audience Room at Buckingham Palace, London. King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark also had one presented to them during a visit to Paris which was sold Christie’s, London, 14 May 1998, lot 5.
