Lot Essay

A pair of Louis XIV candlesticks of exactly the same model were formerly in the collection of Hubert de Givenchy (sold 'Magnificent French Furniture, Silver and Works of Art, From the Collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy', Christie’s, Monaco, 4 December 1993, lot 8, FF1,054,500). Another pair of four-light candelabra with stems of the same model were formerly in the collection of Jacques Doucet (sold Jacques Doucet Collection, Part III, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 7-8 June 1912, lot 260). The three lower branches on each candelabrum were divided by cartouches centred by the cross of Lorraine, the emblem of the Guise-Lorraine family, to whom they had traditionally belonged.
