Effetto di Neve

Cesare Maggi was born into a family of actors. His interest in painting was sparked at a very early age, initially with tuition from Vittorio Matteo Corcos. Maggi’s own particular style developed after viewing the posthumous show of Giovanni Segantini in 1889 at the Milanese Society of Fine Arts. This was the turning point which would direct his work towards a more Divisionist character.

In 1907 a second generation of Divisionists were promoted through the patronage of Alberto Grubicy’s gallery in Milan. This commercial collaboration enabled Maggi to establish himself quickly as one of the leading representatives of the second generation of Divisionist painters in Italy. He worked to depict all forms and effects of light and atmosphere as accurately as possible, rising to the challenge of depicting pure sunlight reflecting on snow in the present lot.
