Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot sketched this bouquet on Wednesday 31 May 1871 during his stay in Arras.
Corot’s esteemed friend, biographer, and engraver, Mr. Alfred Robaut, asked Corot for permission to buy this study for his wife. Corot responded to his desire with the following letter, addressed to his friend in Douai: 'Arras, June 2, 1871. My dear friend, I am happy that the bouquet will please Madame Elisa. Let me make the offer of this pretty bunch. Above all, let's not talk about money… A thousand regards to all. All yours, C. Corot'.
Alfred Robaut was the author of the first catalogue of works by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Eugène Delacroix. Elise was the eldest daughter of Constant Dutilleux. Constant was also a painter and a friend of both Corot and Delacroix.
