Lot Essay

Shiro Kuramata's 'Sydney' chair was designed for The House of Fiction: Domestic Blueprints in Wood exhibition held by the Crafts Council of New South Wales in Sydney in 1988. The exhibition focused on creations by designers that featured domestic timber, such as the present Australian brush box wood. Only one of these chairs was created with this wood type, with one other produced using chipboard, or Oriented Strand Board (OSB), tinted with a pearly pink finish. The present lot is a unique work exhibiting Kuramata's craftsmanship and ingenuity in modern design.
