Carl Jung (1875-1961)
Autograph letter signed (‘C.G. Jung’) to Rivkah Shärf, Küsnacht-Zürich, 20 December 1942
In German. 2 pages, 297 x 208mm. Headed paper. Envelope.

‘Disgusting-poisonous-diabolical’: Jung on dream interpretation, the Ego and the Self. Jung comments on a dream which Shärf has described to him: ‘the mindset of the conscious (morals defined by law) poisons nature. As a consequence, it becomes disgusting-poisonous-diabolical, caused by a hostile morality that is rational and intellectual. The only correct way of treating the unconscious is to imitate it, so to speak, that is, without thinking it to pieces. “Treat the impossible as if it were possible.”’

The recipient is Jung’s student and friend, the Swiss psychoanalyst Dr Rivkah Schärf Kluger (1907-1987).
