GOULD, John (1804-1881)
A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans. London: for the Author, [1833-]1834[-1835].
A wide-margined copy of the first edition of Gould's first ornithological monograph. The toucan family is limited to Mexico, Central and South America and some West Indian islands. Lear's remarkable images of toucans, which fill the plate, showing the young birds with the fully grown, are regarded as among the best of his zoological drawings; the uncoloured plate accompanies Richard Owen's final chapter on the anatomy of the toucan, written especially for the work. Anker 170; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.101; Nissen IVB 378; Sauer 3; Wood p. 364; Zimmer pp. 252-253.

Large folio (560 x 375mm). 33 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after Edward Lear (10) and John and Elizabeth Gould (23), one uncoloured plate by and after George Scharf, all printed by Charles Hullmandel (title very faintly soiled mainly on verso, subscribers list heavily soiled and creased with 110mm and 25mm repaired tears in blank areas without loss, some light spotting and offsetting mainly confined to extremities but with plates 5, 9 and 18 more heavily affected). 20th-century green three-quarter morocco by Riviere & Son, top edge gilt (extremities faintly rubbed, spine sunned). Provenance: Harwarden Castle (small library label on front pastedown).
