ROBERTS, David (1796-1864)
The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia ... with historical descriptions by the Revd. George Croly. London: F.G. Moon, 1842-1843-1849.
The first edition of David Roberts’s monumental depictions of the Holy Land and Middle East. An unusually clean copy without any significant spotting to the text or plates. This is Roberts’s greatest work alongside his publication on Egypt and Nubia (see following lot).

In February 1840 Roberts set out across the Sinai for Palestine by way of Suez, Mount Sinai and Petra, arriving in Gaza, and then concluding his tour in Jerusalem. The publisher, F.G. Moon, paid Roberts £3,000 for the copyright of his sketches, and for his labour in supervising Louis Haghe's masterly lithography. Abbey, Travel 385.

The plates in this set are bound as follows (Abbey numbers), volume 1: 1 (portrait), 2 (title), 3-26, 89-106, 84-87, 46-53; volume 2: 45 (title), 88 (title), 54-83, 27-44, and 107-124. Abbey, Travel 385.

3 volumes bound in 2, folio (605 x 415mm), 3 pictorial titles, portrait of David Roberts, 60 plates and 60 half-page illustrations, all tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe after David Roberts, paper guards, engraved map ‘to illustrate the route of David Roberts Esq., R.A. in the Holy Land, Petrea & Syria’, 2 leaves of subscribers, list of subjects in volume 2 (dust-stain and crease to the corner of 2 leaves in volume 2, light offsetting of plates onto the paper guards, spotting to blank endpapers). Contemporary pebble grain maroon morocco gilt by Clarke and Bedford, sides with richly tooled borders, spines in compartments with raised bands gilt, gilt dentelles, gilt edges, gilt arms of the 3rd Earl of Harewood stamped to sides (bindings rubbed). Provenance: Henry Lascelles, 3rd Earl of Harewood (1797-1857; arms stamped in gilt to sides)—thence by family descent.
