Lot Essay

The present engraving is based on Michelangelo's lost cartoon of The Battle of Cascina. The famous composition, created as a companion piece to Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari, inspired and was disseminated through numerous engraved versions, both of the complete scene and of individual figures, including prints by Marcantonio Raimondi and Agostino Veneziano.
