Lot Essay

Although the sheet is larger than the recorded plate size, the upper platemark is not visible. It is likely that the upper platemark was masked or padded out during the printing process, possibly with the aim of extending the expanse of the blank sky above the landscape. A similar phenomenon has been observed in an impression of the Landscape with Cottages and a Hay Barn: Oblong (NH 199), sold recently in these rooms (The Sam Josefowitz Collection - Graphic Masterpieces by Rembrandt van Rijn, London, 7 December 2023, lot 36).
